Homework Policy
There will be seven homework assignments, assigned every Monday (with the exception of midterms and Week 10) and due Monday of next week. Homework will be submitted through Gradescope. Part of the homework will be graded on correctness, and the rest will be graded on completion. The lowest two homework grades will be dropped. No late submissions will be accepted.
I highly encourage you to type up homework assignments in LaTeX. The easiest way to get started is by creating an Overleaf account here.
Exams
There are two midterms in the course. The first one will be on February 3rd and the second one will be on March 3rd during the usual lecture time. The final exam will be on March 18, 3:00pm-6:00pm.
Grading Policy
The grade is assigned based on the maximum of the following two schemes:
Scheme 1 | Scheme 2 |
Homework: 30% | Homework: 30% |
Midterm 1: 20% | Maximum of Midterm 1 or Midterm 2: 30% |
Midterm 2: 20% | Final Exam: 40% |
Final Exam: 30% |
Discussion Policy
Since real analysis is quite an intricate and difficult subject, additional practice outside the assigned homework problems is crucial to success in the course. Consequently, I will be providing a number of activities (listed in the table below) that help develop a deeper understanding of course concepts. The list of activities includes midterm performance, weekly attendance and active participation in discussion, as well as additional weekly problem sets. The completion of any of the below assignments/activities is optional, but highly encouraged. Each activity carries a certain number of points, which can be found in the table below.
At the end of the quarter, all students that have obtained at least 100 points will be entered in a random drawing for four $25 Amazon gift cards.
Activity | Point Value | Frequency |
Discussion Attendance | 5 points | Once per week |
Problem Set: Easy (Problems 1-4) | 5 points | Once per week |
Problem Set: Intermediate (Problem 5-7) | 7.5 points | Once per week |
Problem Set: Challenging (Problem 8-9) | 10 points | Once per week |
Midterm Performance (Cutoff TBD) | 20 points | Twice per quarter |
Problem Sets
For weekly problem sets, you have the option of completing either four easy problems (Problems 1-4), three intermediate problems (Problem 5-7), or two challenging problems (Problem 8-9). Submissions will be graded on accuracy. The problem sets will be due the Monday after the week in which the content was covered (e.g., the Week 1 problem set will be due on Monday of Week 2). Solutions will be posted on this website.
The solutions should be submitted to me by email, with your UCLA student ID listed on each submission.
Here are the weekly discussion notes:
